About printer labels

A printer label is a sheet or roll of adhesive labels on a liner, cut to a standard layout so software can position text and graphics on each label. Laser labels have adhesive and facestock rated for fuser heat; inkjet labels use a coating that absorbs ink and dries quickly; many Avery sheets are rated for both. Avery template numbers such as 5160 for 30-up address labels or 5163 for 2 x 4 shipping labels map to layouts in Avery Design & Print, Microsoft Word and most shipping software.

Common formats include address labels (1 x 2 5/8, 30 per sheet), return address labels (1/2 x 1 3/4, 80 per sheet), shipping labels (2 x 4 at 10 per sheet, 3 1/3 x 4 at 6 per sheet, and full-sheet 8 1/2 x 11), round labels from 1 to 2 1/2 inches, square labels, file folder labels and adhesive name badges. Finishes range from white matte to glossy, clear, kraft brown and removable. DYMO rolls print one label at a time from a thermal LabelWriter without ink or toner.

Offices use address and file labels for mailings and records. Online sellers print shipping labels, product labels and branded stickers. Schools and event teams print name tags and badge inserts. Food, candle and cosmetic makers use round and square print-to-the-edge labels for jars and boxes. When buying, confirm printer type, template number, sheet count per pack and whether the adhesive is permanent or removable; Sure Feed and Easy Peel features reduce misfeeds and speed up peeling.

Printer Labels buying guide

How to pick the right printer labels and pack size.

  1. Laser, inkjet or both

Check your printer first. Laser labels withstand fuser heat; inkjet labels have a coating that absorbs ink and resists smearing. Many Avery white labels are rated for both, but glossy and clear labels are often printer-specific. Using the wrong type can smear, jam or leave adhesive in the printer.

  2. Know the Avery template number

The number on the pack, such as 5160, 5163 or 8160, identifies the layout. Avery Design & Print, Word and most shipping and mail-merge tools list templates by that number, and compatible products from other brands often reference it. Match the number and alignment is automatic.

  3. Size and labels per sheet

Address labels run 30 per sheet at 1 x 2 5/8 inches. Shipping labels are 10 per sheet at 2 x 4 or 6 per sheet at 3 1/3 x 4. Full-sheet labels are 1 per page. Multiply labels per sheet by sheets per pack to compare true unit cost between packs.

  4. Permanent vs removable adhesive

Permanent labels are standard for shipping, addresses and product packaging. Removable labels peel off cleanly for pricing, temporary filing and bin tags. For packaging that gets cold or wet, look for waterproof or weatherproof film labels rather than paper.

  5. Sheets vs DYMO rolls

Sheet labels suit batch printing on an office printer and give a wide range of sizes and finishes. DYMO LabelWriter rolls print one label at a time with thermal heat, so there is no ink or toner, which suits shipping stations that print a few labels at a time all day.

Printer Labels: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying printer labels from SNILLC.

Are the printer labels on SNILLC genuine Avery brand products?

Yes. All printer labels are new, genuine and in original manufacturer packaging. Of the 227 items in the category, 210 are Avery, with the remainder from DYMO, Pres-a-ply and Rediform. SNILLC does not sell generic or relabeled label sheets.

Can I buy printer labels in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members pay wholesale and case-pack prices on 100-sheet boxes and multi-box cases of Avery and DYMO labels. For 6 or more packs or a pallet, use Request a bulk quote in the cart. Membership is $49 per year and may require a resale certificate or EIN.

Which brands of printer labels does SNILLC carry?

Avery is the main brand with 210 items covering shipping, address, round, square, name tag, file folder and Sure Feed labels. DYMO adds 11 LabelWriter roll products, Pres-a-ply offers 4 economy sheet labels and Rediform has 1 item.

Do you ship printer labels nationwide and how fast?

SNILLC ships within the United States only, from Rancho Cordova, California, with tracking on every order. Ready to Ship items leave fastest. Delivery time depends on the carrier and your distance from Northern California.

Is there a minimum order for printer labels?

No. Retail shoppers can buy a single pack. Shipping is free at $60 or more and $9.99 under that. Business members have no minimum, though bulk quotes are intended for 6 or more packs or pallet quantities.

What is the difference between laser and inkjet labels?

Laser labels have heat-resistant adhesive and facestock so they pass through a fuser without curling or releasing glue. Inkjet labels have an absorbent coating that dries ink fast and resists smearing. Many Avery white labels are rated for both printers; glossy, clear and photo labels are usually one or the other.

What does the Avery template number mean?

The number, such as 5160 or 5163, identifies the exact label size and layout on the sheet. Select the same number in Avery Design & Print, Microsoft Word or your shipping software and the text lines up with each label. Different packs with the same number share the layout even if finish or printer type differs.

Which Avery labels should I use for Amazon or eBay shipping?

Most sellers use 2 x 4 inch labels, 10 per sheet, for carrier labels printed on a desktop printer, or full-sheet 8 1/2 x 11 labels for half-page postage. For high-volume stations, DYMO 4 x 6 thermal rolls avoid ink and toner costs.

Can I print round or square labels to the edge for product packaging?

Yes. Avery Sure Feed round labels in 2 inch and square labels in 3 x 3 inch are designed for print-to-the-edge artwork with no white border. They feed reliably through laser and inkjet printers and are popular for jars, tins, candles and boxes.

How should I store label sheets so they do not jam or curl?

Keep sheets flat in the original box at room temperature and normal humidity, away from sun. Load only as many sheets as you will print, and use the manual or straight-path feed on your printer. Avoid running a sheet through twice.
