About index dividers

An index divider is a heavy paper or polypropylene sheet, punched for three-ring binders, with a tab that extends past the page edge so each section is visible at a glance. Standard dividers are letter size, 8.5x11 in, with tabs along the right edge. Sets come in counts of 5, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 31 tabs. Tabs are preprinted with numbers or letters, left blank for handwriting, or made with clear plastic pockets that hold a printed paper insert.

Table of Contents dividers add a cover page with a numbered list that matches the tabs, so a reader finds the section number on the contents page and flips straight to that tab. Avery Ready Index sets print from a free online template. Big Tab dividers have taller tabs for more text. Plastic dividers hold up to daily handling in training manuals and classroom binders, while paper dividers cost less for one-time reports and proposals.

Legal dividers follow a different standard. Exhibit dividers have tabs along the side or bottom, printed with letters A-Z or numbers 1-25 and up, and are punched for two-hole top fasteners as well as three rings. Law offices use them to mark exhibits in briefs, depositions and closing binders. When choosing dividers, count the sections you need, decide between paper and plastic, and check whether the binder is letter, legal or half size.

Index Dividers buying guide

How to pick the right index dividers and pack size.

  1. Count your sections first

    Pick a tab count that matches or slightly exceeds the number of sections. A 5-tab set fits most reports; 8- and 10-tab sets suit project binders; 12-tab sets cover monthly records; 15- and 31-tab sets handle daily or annual files. Unused tabs can be left blank.

  2. Paper or plastic tabs

    Paper dividers with reinforced tabs cost the least and are fine for binders that sit on a shelf. Plastic insertable tabs and full poly dividers resist tearing and liquids and are the better choice for classroom binders, field manuals and anything opened daily.

  3. Preprinted, blank or insertable

    Preprinted tabs with numbers, months or A-Z need no setup. Blank write-on tabs are fastest for small batches. Insertable tabs take a printed paper strip and look the most polished; Avery supplies free templates for each divider product number.

  4. Match the binder size

    Standard dividers are 8.5x11 in for letter binders. Legal binders need 8.5x14 in dividers. Mini binders take 5.5x8.5 in dividers with their own 7-hole or 3-hole punch pattern. Check the sheet size on the binder before ordering dividers.

  5. Legal exhibit dividers

    For court filings and deposition binders, choose side-tab or bottom-tab exhibit dividers with the numbering your matter requires: A-Z, 1-25, 26-50 or a Table of Contents set. They are punched for both three-ring binders and two-prong fasteners. Buy in 5-set or 25-set packs.
