About adhesive tapes

Adhesive tape is a backing plus an adhesive, and the pairing decides what the tape is for. Duct tape has a cloth-reinforced polyethylene backing with a thick rubber adhesive, tears by hand and sticks to rough surfaces, so it is the general repair and bundling tape. Standard rolls are 1.88 inches wide, with lengths from 10 yards for colored craft rolls to 45 or 60 yards for contractor rolls. T-REX and 3M Pro Strength grades use thicker backing and more adhesive for heavier loads.

Electrical tape is stretchy vinyl with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, usually 3/4 inch wide and rated for 600 volts. Black is the standard insulating color; red, white, blue and green are used for phase and conductor marking. Painter's tape, such as ScotchBlue, is a crepe paper masking tape with a low-tack adhesive that removes cleanly from painted walls and trim for up to 14 days; standard masking tape sticks harder and can leave residue.

Specialty tapes solve narrower problems. Adhesive transfer tape, such as 3M 468MP, is adhesive on a release liner with no carrier, applied with a dispenser gun to bond paper, foam and plastics in graphics and assembly. Foam mounting tape and Command strips hold frames, signs and hooks on walls, and Command strips remove without damage. Butyl tape seals seams against water, and hook and loop strips make a removable fastener for panels and cables.

Adhesive Tapes buying guide

How to pick the right adhesive tapes and pack size.

  1. Pick the Tape by Surface and Job

Duct tape for rough surfaces, bundling and temporary repairs. Electrical tape for insulating and color-coding wire. Painter's tape for masking that must come off clean. Transfer or foam tape for permanent mounting. Using duct tape where painter's tape belongs leaves adhesive residue; using painter's tape for a repair will not hold.

  2. Compare Roll Width and Length

Duct tape rolls are usually 1.88 inches wide, but lengths run from 10 yards (craft and colored rolls) to 45 or 60 yards (gray contractor rolls). Electrical tape is 3/4 inch by 20 or 66 feet. Price per yard is the fair comparison when a 3-pack looks cheaper than a single long roll.

  3. Standard, Pro and Extra Strength Duct Tape

Standard Duck gray duct tape handles most household and office jobs. 3M Pro Strength 1260-C and T-REX use heavier cloth backing and more adhesive for outdoor, automotive and heavy repair work. Colored and printed Duck Tape is standard grade meant for crafts, labeling and decoration.

  4. Electrical Tape Ratings and Colors

Look for vinyl electrical tape rated to 600 V and marked UL listed for insulating splices. Black is the all-purpose color. Keep a few colors on hand for phase marking: in US practice black, red and blue mark phases on 208 V systems, brown, orange and yellow on 480 V, with white for neutral and green for ground.

  5. Choose Painter's Tape by Surface and Time

ScotchBlue original is a 14-day clean removal tape for walls and trim. Delicate-surface tapes have even lower tack for fresh paint and wallpaper. Multi-surface tapes grip better on glass and metal. A tape applicator speeds up long straight runs along baseboards and ceilings.

Adhesive Tapes: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying adhesive tapes from SNILLC.

Are the adhesive tapes on SNILLC genuine brand products?

Yes. Every roll is a new, genuine product from Duck Brand, 3M, Scotch, T-REX, Shurtech, Command or Nexcare in original manufacturer packaging. SNILLC does not sell generic or relabeled tape.

Can I buy adhesive tapes in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members ($49 per year) get wholesale and case-pack pricing on duct tape, electrical tape, painter's tape and transfer tape. Tapes are stocked in 3-packs, 6-packs and manufacturer cases. For 6 or more packs or pallet quantities, use Request a bulk quote in the cart.

Which brands of adhesive tapes does SNILLC carry?

Duck Brand is the largest line with about 95 items, followed by Shurtech, T-REX, 3M, Scotch, Command and Nexcare. Together they cover duct tape, electrical tape, painter's tape, adhesive transfer tape, foam tape, butyl tape, picture hanging strips and hook and loop strips.

Do you ship adhesive tapes nationwide, and how fast?

Yes. SNILLC ships to every US state from Rancho Cordova, California, with tracking on every order. Ready-to-ship items go out fastest, and West Coast addresses usually receive orders sooner than the East Coast. SNILLC does not ship outside the United States.

Is there a minimum order for tape?

No. Retail shoppers can buy a single roll. Business members get wholesale pricing on standard packs, and bulk quotes start at 6 packs or case quantities.

What is the difference between duct tape, electrical tape and painter's tape?

Duct tape is cloth-reinforced with a strong rubber adhesive for repairs and bundling. Electrical tape is stretchy vinyl rated to insulate wire splices up to 600 volts. Painter's tape is low-tack crepe paper that masks surfaces and peels off clean. Each is designed for a different job and does not substitute well for the others.

What is 3M adhesive transfer tape used for?

Adhesive transfer tape such as 3M 468MP is a layer of adhesive on a liner with no backing. It is applied with a dispenser or by hand to bond paper, foam, plastics and nameplates, leaving an invisible bond. Sign shops, print finishers and assemblers use it for mounting graphics and attaching labels.

Will painter's tape damage my walls?

ScotchBlue and other painter's tapes are made to remove cleanly from cured paint within the time printed on the roll, usually 14 days for standard and longer for delicate-surface tapes. Remove it slowly at a 45 degree angle. Avoid taping over paint less than 30 days old unless the tape is marked for delicate surfaces.

What is 3M red lens repair tape for?

3M 03441 red lens repair tape is a weatherproof, translucent red tape for sealing cracked tail lights, brake lights and marker lamps so moisture stays out and the lamp stays legal until the lens is replaced. It is also available in amber and clear for turn signals and headlamps.

How should tape be stored so it stays sticky?

Store rolls in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, ideally at 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat softens adhesive and causes rolls to ooze; cold makes it hard to unroll. Most duct and electrical tape keeps for a year or more under these conditions, and rotating stock oldest-first avoids problems.
