About envelopes, mailers & shipping supplies

Shipping supplies are the consumables a mailroom or shipping station goes through every week. Packing tape seals cartons; most carton-sealing tape is 1.88 inches wide on a 3 inch core, in clear or tan. Bubble wrap and packing paper fill the space around an item so it does not move in transit. Stretch film wraps pallets or bundles. A postal scale tells you the weight before you buy postage, which avoids underpaid mail and returned parcels.

Envelopes come in a few standard shapes. A #10 business envelope (4 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches) holds a letter folded in thirds. A #6 3/4 envelope (3 5/8 x 6 1/2 inches) holds a letter folded in half again and is common for remittances and statements; security versions have a printed tint inside so contents cannot be read through the paper. Clasp envelopes in 9x12 and 10x13 kraft paper hold documents flat and reclose with a metal clasp and gummed flap. Self-sealing flaps save time when sending in volume.

Mailers protect items that do not need a full box. A bubble mailer is a plastic or kraft envelope lined with bubble cushioning; sizes run from #000 (about 4x8 inches) up through #7 (about 14.25x20 inches), with #0 fitting DVDs and small books. Box mailers are folding corrugated cartons for heavier items, and tube mailers protect posters and prints. Pick the mailer that fits snugly so the contents cannot shift, and use tape rated for the carton weight.

How to pick the right envelopes, mailers & shipping supplies and pack size.

  1. Match the Envelope to the Contents

    A #10 envelope takes a standard letter folded in thirds; a #6 3/4 takes a half-sheet or a letter folded twice. Use 9x12 for unfolded letter-size documents and 10x13 when the stack is thick or includes a folder. Choose security tint for checks and statements.

  2. Kraft Clasp vs Self-Seal

    Clasp envelopes can be opened and reclosed, which suits internal routing and files that get handled more than once. Press-It Seal-It and other self-sealing envelopes close with a peel strip and are faster when you mail many pieces at once. Both come in 24 lb or 28 lb paper; heavier paper resists tearing.

  3. Pick the Right Packing Tape

    Standard acrylic packing tape in 1.88 inch width seals most cartons under 30 lb. Heavy-duty or hot-melt tape grips better on recycled cardboard and heavier boxes. Check the roll length (yards) when comparing prices, because refill rolls and dispenser rolls are often different lengths.

  4. Size Bubble Mailers by Number

    Bubble mailer sizes are numbered: #000 is about 4x8 inches, #0 is about 6x10, #2 is about 8.5x12 and #5 is about 10.5x16. The usable inside dimension is roughly an inch smaller than the outside size, so measure the item and allow for the seal.

  5. Weigh Before You Ship

    A desktop postal scale that reads in 0.1 oz steps pays for itself quickly by preventing overpaid or returned postage. Pick a capacity above your heaviest typical package; DYMO desk scales commonly handle 5 lb to 10 lb for letters and small parcels.
