About labels & stickers
A label is a self-adhesive sheet or roll of paper or film, die-cut to a set size, with a release liner on the back. Printer labels come on 8.5x11 sheets laid out for a specific Avery template number, so the sheet feeds through a standard laser or inkjet printer and every label prints in the right place. Roll labels, such as DYMO LabelWriter rolls, print one at a time on a thermal label printer and need no ink.
The adhesive decides how a label behaves. Permanent adhesive bonds within a day and tears the paper if removed; it is the choice for shipping labels, address labels and file folder labels that stay put. Removable adhesive lets a label peel off cleanly for weeks or months, which suits pricing labels, inventory tags and classroom use. Avery Sure Feed sheets have a strip that keeps the sheet from skewing in the printer, and print-to-the-edge labels have no white border.

Match the Avery template number
Every Avery sheet label has a product number such as 5160, 8160 or 5163 that corresponds to a layout in Word, Google Docs and Avery Design & Print. Pick the label by template number and the layout lines up. Pres-a-ply sheets list the Avery number they match.
Laser, inkjet or both
Laser labels use heat-resistant adhesive and paper that will not curl in a fuser. Inkjet labels have a coating that absorbs ink without smearing. Many Avery labels are rated for both, but glossy and clear labels are usually one or the other, so check before you load a sheet.
Permanent vs removable adhesive
Use permanent labels for anything that ships or gets filed for years. Use removable labels for pricing, temporary inventory, classroom supplies and anything on glass or plastic you will relabel later. Removable labels are also safer on rented equipment and library books.

What is the difference between laser and inkjet labels?
Laser labels are built to take the heat of a laser printer's fuser without curling or releasing adhesive. Inkjet labels have an ink-absorbing coating so text dries sharp. Many Avery white matte labels work in both; glossy, clear and photo labels are usually printer-specific.
How do I find the right Avery label template?

Will removable labels come off cleanly?
