About staples

A staple is described by wire gauge, crown width and leg length. The common office staple is 26/6: 26 gauge wire with a 6 mm (1/4 inch) leg, and a crown about 1/2 inch wide. It fastens up to about 30 sheets of 20 lb paper. Staples are glued into strips, usually 210 per strip, and boxed 5,000 to a box. Stapler makers also sell brand-specific sizes, such as Bostitch B8 PowerCrown, which has a wider crown and fits only B8 staplers.

Heavy-duty staples use thicker wire and longer legs to go through more paper. A 3/8 inch leg handles roughly 40 to 60 sheets, 1/2 inch about 100 sheets, 5/8 inch about 130, and 3/4 inch or more up to 240 sheets. Bostitch SB35 is a common 1/2 inch heavy-duty size. Heavy-duty staplers only work with the leg length set for the stack, so offices keep two or three sizes on hand.

Tacker and staple gun staples are a different family. Fine wire staples such as Rapid 19-series and Stanley TRA704T are narrow crown 1/4 inch staples for hammer tackers and light staple guns, used to fasten paper, poly sheeting, insulation facing and fabric to wood. They are boxed 1,000 or more and must match the tool series printed on the tool. Using an office staple in a tacker, or the reverse, will jam the tool.

Staples buying guide

How to pick the right staples and pack size.

  1. Read the Stapler Base First

The staple size a stapler takes is printed on its base or in the manual. Most desktop staplers take standard 1/4 inch (26/6) staples. Bostitch B8 models take B8 PowerCrown. Heavy-duty staplers list a range, such as 1/4 to 1/2 inch, and work best when the leg matches the stack thickness.

  2. Match Leg Length to Sheet Count

Use 1/4 inch for up to about 30 sheets, 3/8 inch for 40 to 60 sheets, 1/2 inch for around 100 sheets and 5/8 to 3/4 inch for 130 to 240 sheets. Legs that are too long bend under the stack; legs that are too short will not clinch. A heavy-duty stapler needs its depth adjusted to the leg length.

  3. Standard Crown vs PowerCrown

Standard staples have a roughly 1/2 inch crown. Bostitch B8 PowerCrown staples have a wider crown that spreads the hold across more paper, which keeps thick stacks from tearing. They are not interchangeable with standard staples, so buy PowerCrown only for B8 staplers.

  4. Tacker Staples Are Not Office Staples

Rapid 19-series and Stanley TRA704T are fine wire, narrow crown staples for hammer tackers and light staple guns. The tool series is printed on the tacker. They are sold 1,000 or more per box and are used on wood, fabric and sheeting, not in desktop staplers.

  5. Buy by the Case for Shared Offices

Standard staples come 5,000 per box and in 6-box value packs such as the Bostitch B8 pack. A busy office of ten people typically uses a box or two per desk per year, so a case covers a year of restocking. Keep heavy-duty sizes in smaller quantities unless they are in daily use.

Staples: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying staples from SNILLC.

Are the staples on SNILLC genuine brand products?

Yes. Every box of staples is a new, genuine product from Bostitch, Stanley, Swingline, Spec Ops, PaperPro, Rapid, Rexel, Charles Leonard or MAX in original manufacturer packaging. SNILLC does not sell generic or repackaged staples.

Can I buy staples in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members ($49 per year) get wholesale and case-pack pricing on staples. Standard staples ship 5,000 per box, with 6-box value packs and full cases available. For 6 or more packs or pallet quantities, use Request a bulk quote in the cart.

Which brands of staples does SNILLC carry?

Bostitch is the largest line with about 50 staple products, followed by Stanley, Swingline, Spec Ops, PaperPro, Rapid, Rexel, Charles Leonard and MAX. This covers standard office staples, heavy-duty staples and fine wire tacker staples.

Do you ship staples nationwide, and how fast?

Yes. SNILLC ships to every US state from Rancho Cordova, California, with tracking on all orders. Ready-to-ship staples leave fastest, and West Coast addresses usually receive orders sooner than the East Coast. SNILLC does not ship outside the United States.

Is there a minimum order for staples?

No. Retail shoppers can buy a single box of staples. Business members get wholesale pricing on standard boxes and packs, and bulk quotes start at 6 packs or case quantities.

What size staples fit a standard stapler?

Most desktop staplers take standard 1/4 inch staples, also called 26/6, with 5,000 per box. Check the stapler base to confirm. Bostitch B8 staplers need B8 PowerCrown staples, and reduced-effort PaperPro staplers may take 25/10 high-capacity staples instead.

What is the difference between standard and heavy-duty staples?

Standard staples have a 1/4 inch leg and fasten up to about 30 sheets. Heavy-duty staples have thicker wire and legs from 3/8 inch to 3/4 inch or longer, fastening 40 to 240 sheets. They only work in heavy-duty staplers, and the leg length must be matched to the stack thickness.

What are Bostitch B8 PowerCrown staples?

B8 PowerCrown staples are Bostitch 1/4 inch staples with a wider crown than standard staples, which spreads the hold across more paper and keeps thick stacks flat. They fit Bostitch B8 staplers only and are sold in 5,000-count boxes and 6-box value packs.

Can I use Rapid 19-series or Stanley TRA704T staples in a desktop stapler?

No. Rapid 19-series and Stanley TRA704T are fine wire, narrow crown staples made for hammer tackers and light staple guns. Office staplers take standard or heavy-duty staples with a wider crown. Using the wrong type in either tool will jam it.

How should staples be stored?

Keep staple boxes closed, dry and at room temperature. Humidity can rust the wire and weaken the glue that holds strips together, which causes jams. Stored properly, staples last indefinitely, so buying a case for a year of use is practical.
