The most popular size, 2.5 x 1/16 inch, in a 1/4 lb box. A general purpose office band for mail, receipts and small bundles.
A 1/4 lb box with a mix of sizes for desks that need a few different widths without buying several boxes.
Small 7/8 x 1/16 inch bands in a 1/4 lb box for pens, cables, bagged parts and rolled bills.
Non-latex, brightly colored 7 inch file bands that wrap legal folders and thick files, with colors for coding by project or department.
Beige 3 x 1/8 inch #32 bands in a 1 lb box, a common size for bank straps, mail bundles and shipping documents.
Alliance bands up to #117 (7 inches long), plus wide #64 and #84 bands and non-latex options for schools and food handling.
Rubber bands are sized by a number that encodes length and width. Bands numbered 8 through 19 are 1/16 inch wide, 30 through 35 are 1/8 inch wide, and 60 through 64 are 1/4 inch wide. Within each series the number rises with length: a #16 is 2.5 inches long, a #19 is 3.5 inches, a #32 is 3 inches and a #64 is 3.5 inches by 1/4 inch. Length is measured flat, so a band stretches to roughly two to three times its listed size.
Bands are sold by weight, usually 1/4 lb and 1 lb boxes, so the count per box depends on the size. A 1/4 lb box of #16 holds around 450 bands; a 1 lb box of #32 holds roughly 700. Alliance Advantage is the general purpose natural rubber line; Alliance also makes non-latex bands for schools, hospitals and food service where latex allergy is a concern, and Brites file bands in bright colors for color coding.
Choose by the job. #8 and #12 hold pens, cables and small bagged parts. #16 and #19 are everyday office bands for mail and receipts. #32 and #33 bundle documents and bank straps. #64 is the wide band used for shipping documents and heavy bundles. #117 and 7 inch file bands wrap entire legal folders. A wider band holds with less tension and lasts longer than a narrow band stretched to its limit.
How to pick the right rubber bands and pack size.
The number tells you width series and length. Bands #8 to #19 are 1/16 inch wide, #30 to #35 are 1/8 inch, #60 to #64 are 1/4 inch. A #16 is 2.5 inches long, a #32 is 3 inches, a #64 is 3.5 inches. Pick a length about half the circumference of what you are bundling.
A wider band at low stretch holds longer and breaks less often than a thin band stretched tight. For thick files or bundles of mail, step up to a #33, #64 or a 7 inch file band rather than doubling a #16.
Alliance Advantage bands are natural rubber, which gives the best stretch and recovery. Non-latex bands such as Alliance Brites avoid latex allergy issues and are the right choice for schools, medical offices and food handling. They cost a little more and stretch slightly less.
Boxes are sold by weight, so smaller sizes give more bands per box. A 1/4 lb box of #16 contains roughly 450 bands, while a 1 lb box of #32 holds about 700. For a shared mailroom or bank, 1 lb boxes cost less per band; for a desk, a 1/4 lb box is plenty.
Rubber dries out and cracks when exposed to sunlight, heat and ozone. Keep boxes closed in a drawer or cabinet and rotate older stock first. Stored properly, natural rubber bands last a couple of years; bands left on a sunny windowsill can fail in months.

The number encodes width and length. #8 to #19 are 1/16 inch wide, #30 to #35 are 1/8 inch wide and #60 to #64 are 1/4 inch wide. Length rises with the number within each series: a #16 is 2.5 inches, a #19 is 3.5 inches, a #32 is 3 inches and a #64 is 3.5 inches.
#16 and #19 are the standard office sizes for mail, receipts and small bundles. For file folders and bank straps use #32 or #33. For thick legal files or large bundles use #64 or a 7 inch file band, which hold with less tension and last longer.
Boxes are sold by weight, so the count depends on size. A 1/4 lb box of Alliance #16 holds about 450 bands and a 1/4 lb box of #8 holds well over 1,000. A 1 lb box of #32 holds roughly 700. Alliance prints approximate counts on each box.
Yes. Alliance non-latex bands, including the Brites file bands, are made from synthetic rubber and are suitable for schools, medical offices and food service where latex allergy is a concern. They are stocked alongside the natural rubber Advantage line.
Kept in a closed box in a drawer at room temperature, natural rubber bands stay usable for about two years. Heat, direct sunlight and ozone from motors or copiers dry them out and cause cracking. Non-latex bands tend to resist aging a little better.
