About pen refills

A pen refill is the sealed ink reservoir and writing tip that slides into a refillable pen barrel. Swapping a refill costs a fraction of a new pen, cuts plastic waste and lets staff keep a pen whose grip and weight they like. Refills are specific to the pen format: a Pilot G2 refill fits G2-family pens, a Pentel LR7 fits EnerGel pens, and the Parker-style refill is a near-universal size for metal ballpoints. Buying the right refill means matching brand, pen model, point size and ink type.

Refills follow the three main ink types. Gel refills such as the Pilot G2 and Pentel EnerGel LR7 and LRN7 hold water-based pigment gel for a smooth, vivid line. Liquid-ink rollerball refills such as the Pilot Precise V5 RT and V7 RT write wetter and finer. Ballpoint refills such as Parker QuinkFlow, Zebra F-Refill and Pilot Acroball hold oil-based or hybrid ink that dries instantly and lasts the longest per refill. Point sizes run from 0.5 mm extra fine to 1.0 mm bold and are usually printed on the refill.

Most refills are sold in 2-packs for retail and in boxes of 12 for business use. Codes matter: Pentel LR7 is a 0.7 mm metal tip, LRN7 is a 0.7 mm needle tip and LRN5 is a 0.5 mm needle tip; Pilot G2 refills are labeled by point size and color. Offices that standardize on one pen model can stock a single refill in black and blue and cut pen spending substantially over a year. Refills store well sealed for two to three years at room temperature.

Pen Refills buying guide

How to pick the right pen refills and pack size.

  1. Identify your pen model first

Refills are not interchangeable across brands. Look for the model name on the barrel or clip, such as Pilot G2, Pilot Precise V5 RT, Pentel EnerGel RTX, Parker Jotter or Zebra F-301, then buy the refill made for that line. If the pen takes a Parker-style refill, most brands' Parker-format refills will fit.

  2. Decode Pentel refill numbers

Pentel EnerGel refills use a short code: LR7 is a 0.7 mm metal tip, LRN7 is a 0.7 mm needle tip, LRN5 is a 0.5 mm needle tip and LR10 is a 1.0 mm bold tip. A trailing letter is the ink color: A for black, C for blue, B for red. Match the code on your current refill.

  3. Match point size and ink type

Keep the point size you are used to: 0.5 mm extra fine, 0.7 mm fine or medium, 1.0 mm bold. Gel and rollerball refills write smoother; ballpoint refills dry faster and last longer. Many pens accept several point sizes from the same brand, so a Pilot G2 can switch from 0.7 mm to 1.0 mm without changing pens.

  4. Buy 2-packs for desks, dozens for offices

Retail 2-packs of Pilot G2 or Precise refills are convenient for one or two pens. Offices should buy boxes of 12 in black and blue, which lowers the cost per refill. Business members can request bulk pricing on 6 or more boxes and standardize the whole office on one refill.

  5. Store refills sealed and flat

Keep refills in their sealed packaging at room temperature and away from heat and direct sunlight. Sealed gel and ballpoint refills typically stay fresh for two to three years. Rotate stock so the oldest refills are used first, and do not remove the tip cap until the refill is installed.

Pen Refills: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying pen refills from SNILLC.

Are the pen refills on SNILLC genuine brand products?

Yes. Every refill on SNILLC is a new, genuine product from Pilot, Pentel, Parker, uni-ball or Zebra in the manufacturer's original packaging. SNILLC does not sell generic or compatible refills, so each refill fits and writes as the pen maker intended.

Can I buy pen refills in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members with a $49 per year membership get wholesale and case-pack pricing on refills, normally packed 12 to a box of one color and point size. For 6 or more boxes or pallet quantities, add the refills to your cart and choose Request a bulk quote.

Which brands of pen refills does SNILLC carry?

SNILLC carries about 190 refills from Pilot (G2, Precise V5 and V7 RT, Acroball, Dr. Grip), Pentel (EnerGel LR7, LRN7, LRN5 and ballpoint refills), Parker (QuinkFlow and gel), uni-ball (Jetstream, Signo) and Zebra (F-Refill, Sarasa). Pilot and Pentel make up most of the selection.

Do you ship pen refills nationwide and how fast?

SNILLC ships refills to every US state from its Rancho Cordova, California warehouse, with tracking on every order. Refills are small and light, and items marked Ready to ship leave fastest. Transit time depends on the carrier and your distance from Northern California.

Is there a minimum order for pen refills?

No. Retail shoppers can order a single refill or 2-pack. Shipping is free on retail orders of $60 or more and $9.99 under that. Business members buy by the box or case at wholesale prices, and bulk quotes start at 6 or more packs.

Which refill fits a Pilot G2 pen?

The Pilot G2 gel refill, sold in 2-packs in 0.5 mm extra fine, 0.7 mm fine and 1.0 mm bold. The same refill fits the Pilot Dr. Grip gel, G2 Limited, G2 Pro and B2P pens. Choose the point size printed on your current refill or switch sizes within the same pen.

What is the difference between Pentel LR7 and LRN7 refills?

Both are 0.7 mm EnerGel refills that fit the same pens. LR7 has a conical metal tip that is sturdier for hard writers; LRN7 has a slim needle tip that gives a clearer view of the line. The LRN5 is the 0.5 mm needle version. The final letter in the code is the ink color.

Do Parker refills fit other pens?

Often, yes. The Parker-style ballpoint refill is a widely used standard size, so Parker QuinkFlow refills fit Parker Jotter, IM and Sonnet pens and many metal pens from other makers that are built to the same format. Check your pen's manual or current refill to confirm before ordering.

Is it cheaper to buy refills than new pens?

Usually. A refill costs less than a comparable retractable pen and keeps the barrel out of the trash. Offices that standardize on one refillable pen, such as the Pilot G2 or Pentel EnerGel, can stock a single refill in black and blue by the box and cut pen spending over the year.

How long do pen refills last in storage?

Sealed refills generally stay fresh for two to three years when stored at room temperature away from heat and sunlight. Ballpoint refills last longest; gel and liquid-ink refills should be rotated first. Leave the tip cap on until the refill is installed to keep the ink from drying.
