About highlighters

A highlighter is a marker with translucent ink that lets printed text show through a colored band. Most use a chisel tip, which draws a wide stroke across a line of text when held flat and a thin underline when turned on edge. Ink is water-based and comes in fluorescent yellow, pink, orange, green and blue, or in softer pastel shades that photograph and photocopy more cleanly. Pocket-size barrels fit in a pencil case; desk-style barrels hold more ink and are built for heavy daily use.

Students and teachers use highlighters for study notes, textbooks and grading. Offices rely on them for contracts, proofreading, schedules and color-coded filing. Lawyers, accountants and medical offices often standardize on one brand and color set so documents read consistently across a team. Smear-safe formulas matter when marking over fresh inkjet printouts or ballpoint handwriting, which ordinary highlighter ink can drag and blur.

Beyond standard liquid-ink markers, two specialty types are worth knowing. Gel highlighters use a solid wax-like stick that never dries out, will not bleed through bible paper or receipts, and works on glossy pages. Erasable highlighters such as the Pilot FriXion Light use thermo-sensitive ink that the attached rubber tip removes by friction, useful for shared textbooks or documents that may need to be re-marked.

Highlighters buying guide

How to pick the right highlighters and pack size.

  1. Chisel tip vs bullet tip

A chisel tip gives a wide band for full lines of text and a narrow edge for underlining. Bullet tips are rounder and better for circling or small notes. Nearly all office and school highlighters are chisel; choose a desk-style barrel for heavier ink supply.

  2. Liquid ink, gel or erasable

Standard water-based liquid ink is the cheapest and brightest. Gel highlighters never dry out and will not bleed through thin paper, but lay down a slightly waxy stroke. Erasable FriXion Light highlighters can be removed by friction, which suits shared textbooks and drafts.

  3. Smear-safe for printouts

Fresh inkjet or gel-pen writing can smear under a highlighter. If you mark documents right off the printer or over handwritten notes, pick a smear-safe formula such as Avery Hi-Liter or Sharpie Smear Guard, or allow the ink a minute to dry first.

  4. Fluorescent vs pastel colors

Fluorescent yellow is the most visible and photocopies as a light gray. Pastel shades such as BIC pastel chisel highlighters are easier on the eyes and scan more cleanly, which many students and planners prefer. Mixed sets let a team color-code by topic.

  5. Pack sizes for offices and schools

Highlighters come as singles, 2 to 5 count carded packs, 12-count boxes of one color and 24 or 36 count assorted sets. Single-color dozen boxes are the best value for offices. Assorted packs match most back-to-school lists.

Highlighters: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying highlighters from SNILLC.

Are the highlighters on SNILLC genuine brand products?

Yes. All highlighters are new, genuine products in original manufacturer packaging from Sharpie, BIC, Avery Hi-Liter, Pilot and Pentel. SNILLC does not sell generic or relabeled highlighters.

Can I buy highlighters in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members pay wholesale and case-pack prices on dozen boxes and multi-packs. For 6 or more packs or a pallet, use Request a bulk quote in the cart. Membership is $49 per year and may require a resale certificate or EIN.

Which brands of highlighters does SNILLC carry?

About 90 highlighters are in stock: Sharpie (29 items), Pentel (21), BIC (16), Avery Hi-Liter (15) and Pilot (10). This covers chisel-tip pocket and desk-style markers, Sharpie gel highlighters, BIC pastel and Brite Liner, and Pilot FriXion Light erasable highlighters.

Do you ship highlighters nationwide and how fast?

SNILLC ships within the United States only, from Rancho Cordova, California, with tracking on every order. Ready to Ship items leave fastest. Delivery time depends on the carrier and your distance from Northern California.

Is there a minimum order for highlighters?

No. Retail shoppers can buy one highlighter. Shipping is free at $60 and $9.99 below that. Business members have no minimum, though bulk quotes are meant for 6 or more packs or pallet quantities.

What is the difference between a gel highlighter and a regular highlighter?

A regular highlighter uses liquid water-based ink through a felt chisel tip. A gel highlighter such as the Sharpie gel highlighter is a solid stick that never dries out, will not bleed through thin paper and works on glossy pages. Gel strokes are slightly waxy and less fluorescent.

Which highlighter will not smear inkjet printouts?

Choose a smear-safe formula. Avery Hi-Liter desk-style highlighters are made to glide over inkjet and ballpoint ink without smudging, and gel highlighters do not smear at all. Letting a fresh printout dry for a minute also helps.

Do erasable highlighters really erase?

Yes. Pilot FriXion Light highlighters use thermo-sensitive ink that becomes clear when rubbed with the built-in eraser tip. They are handy for shared textbooks and drafts. Avoid leaving marked pages in a hot car, since heat can also fade the ink.

Which highlighters are best for schools versus offices?

Schools usually want assorted color packs with a comfort grip, such as BIC Brite Liner Grip or pastel sets, for notes and color-coding. Offices typically standardize on yellow chisel-tip dozen boxes from Sharpie or Avery for contracts and reports.

How long do highlighters last before drying out?

Sealed highlighters keep for years at room temperature. Once in use, keep caps on tightly and store them flat; liquid ink dries within days if a cap is left off. Gel highlighters never dry out.
