About gel ink pens

A gel pen is a rollerball pen loaded with pigment suspended in a water-based gel rather than the oil-based paste found in a ballpoint. The thicker gel flows through a small rolling ball and lays down a dense, opaque line with very little pressure. Pigment gel ink is more fade-resistant and water-resistant than dye-based liquid ink, which is why gel pens are a common choice for signatures, records and forms that need to last. Most gel pens come in retractable click styles or capped styles with a clip.

Tip size is the main variable. A 0.38 mm or 0.5 mm point writes a fine line for small handwriting, planners and detailed notes. The 0.7 mm medium point is the standard office size and the most common tip in Pilot G2, Pentel EnerGel and Paper Mate InkJoy gel pens. A 1.0 mm bold tip gives a heavy line for signatures and labels. Needle tips are slim metal cones that let you see the line as you write; conical tips are sturdier for hard writers.

Erasable gel pens such as the Pilot FriXion use thermo-sensitive ink that turns clear with the friction of the built-in rubber tip, so notes can be corrected without correction tape. Quick-dry gels from Pentel EnerGel, BIC Gel-ocity and Paper Mate InkJoy are made for left-handed writers and anyone who smears standard gel ink. Most retractable gel pens accept a refill from the same brand, which lowers the cost per pen for offices that buy pens in dozens and refills in bulk.

Gel Ink Pens buying guide

How to pick the right gel ink pens and pack size.

  1. Pick the right tip size

Choose 0.38 mm or 0.5 mm for small handwriting, planners and forms with tight boxes. Pick 0.7 mm for everyday office writing and the widest refill availability. Choose 1.0 mm when you want a bold signature line or large, readable lettering on labels and envelopes.

  2. Retractable or capped

Retractable click pens such as the Pilot G2, Pentel EnerGel RTX and Zebra Sarasa are faster to use and have no cap to lose, which makes them the default for offices. Capped pens cost less per unit and keep the tip from drying, which suits classrooms and bulk giveaways.

  3. Quick-dry and erasable inks

If staff or students smear ink, buy quick-dry gels such as Pentel EnerGel, BIC Gel-ocity or Paper Mate InkJoy Gel. For notes that need correcting, the Pilot FriXion Clicker erases cleanly with its own rubber tip. Do not use erasable ink on checks, contracts or legal documents.

  4. Match the refill before you buy

Refillable gel pens cost less over time than disposable ones. Check that the refill is stocked in your tip size and color before you standardize on a pen. Pilot G2 refills, Pentel EnerGel LR7 and LRN5 refills and uni-ball Signo refills are common and easy to keep in a supply closet.

  5. Buy by the dozen for offices

Most gel pens ship in boxes of 12 of a single color, and many also come in retail 2-packs, 4-packs and assorted color sets. Offices should buy dozens in black and blue; schools and craft buyers get more value from assorted packs. Business members can request case-pack and bulk pricing on 6 or more boxes.

Business members

Gel Ink Pens: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying gel ink pens from SNILLC.

Are the gel ink rollerball pens on SNILLC genuine brand products?

Yes. Every gel and rollerball pen SNILLC sells is a new, genuine product from Pentel, Pilot, uni-ball, Paper Mate, Zebra, BIC or Sharpie in the manufacturer's original packaging. SNILLC does not sell refurbished, generic or relabeled pens.

Can I buy gel ink pens in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members with a $49 per year membership get wholesale and case-pack pricing on gel pens, usually sold by the box of 12. For 6 or more boxes or pallet quantities, add the items to your cart and choose Request a bulk quote for a custom price.

Which brands of gel ink rollerball pens does SNILLC carry?

SNILLC carries over 700 gel and rollerball pens from Pentel (including EnerGel), Pilot (G2, FriXion, Dr. Grip, Precise), uni-ball (Signo, Vision), Paper Mate InkJoy Gel, Zebra Sarasa, BIC Gel-ocity and Sharpie S-Gel. Pentel and Pilot make up the largest share of the catalog.

Do you ship gel pens nationwide and how fast?

SNILLC ships gel pens anywhere in the United States from its warehouse in Rancho Cordova, California, with tracking on every order. Items marked Ready to ship leave fastest. Delivery time depends on the carrier and your distance from Northern California; West Coast orders usually arrive soonest.

Is there a minimum order for gel pens?

No. Retail shoppers can order a single pen. Shipping is free on retail orders of $60 or more and $9.99 below that. Business members buy by the box or case at wholesale prices, and bulk quotes start at 6 or more packs.

What is the difference between a gel pen and a rollerball pen?

Both use a rolling ball and water-based ink, but a gel pen's ink is a thick pigment gel while a classic rollerball such as the Pilot Precise or uni-ball Vision uses thinner liquid ink. Gel ink gives a more opaque, vivid line and comes in more colors; liquid ink rollerballs write wetter and faster with a finer feel.

Which gel pen tip size should I choose for office use?

The 0.7 mm medium tip is the standard choice for everyday office writing and has the widest refill selection in Pilot G2, Pentel EnerGel and Paper Mate InkJoy. Use 0.5 mm for forms and small handwriting, and 1.0 mm for signatures and bold labels.

Can gel pens be refilled?

Most retractable gel pens from Pilot, Pentel, uni-ball and Zebra accept refills from the same brand. The Pilot G2 refill, Pentel EnerGel LR7 and LRN5 refills and uni-ball Signo refills are stocked in SNILLC's Pen Refills category. Low-cost capped gel pens from BIC and Paper Mate are usually disposable.

Are erasable gel pens good for schools?

Yes. The Pilot FriXion Clicker is the top-selling gel pen on SNILLC and is popular with teachers and students because the thermo-sensitive ink erases cleanly with the pen's own rubber tip. Keep FriXion pens away from heat, since the ink fades above about 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and do not use them on legal documents.

How long do gel pens last in storage?

Sealed gel pens generally store well for two to three years when kept capped or retracted at room temperature, out of direct sun and heat. Store boxes flat or tip down. Pens left uncapped or in a hot vehicle can dry out or skip, so rotate older stock first.
