About duct tape

Duct tape has three layers: a polyethylene film on top, a cloth scrim in the middle that gives it tear strength and lets it rip cleanly by hand, and a thick rubber-based adhesive underneath that grips rough and uneven surfaces. The standard width is 1.88 inches (48 mm). Roll lengths vary by grade and purpose: printed craft rolls are 10 yards, colored rolls 20 yards, gray utility rolls 45 yards and contractor rolls 55 to 60 yards. The 3 inch core fits standard tape dispensers.

Grades differ in backing thickness and adhesive weight. Standard Duck gray tape handles everyday repairs, bundling, cable management and carton sealing. Professional grades such as 3M Pro Strength 1260-C use a denser scrim and more adhesive for job-site work. Extra strength tapes such as T-REX are thicker again, with a UV-resistant backing meant for outdoor and automotive use. Colored and printed Duck Tape is standard grade; the color is for identification, decoration and crafts rather than extra strength.

Duct tape works best on clean, dry, room-temperature surfaces and is not the right tape for everything. It is not rated for insulating wire, it will leave residue on painted walls, and despite the name it is not approved for sealing HVAC ducts, where foil tape is used. It does excel at temporary patches on tarps, hoses, tool handles, bins and sports gear, and at marking floors, equipment and bins by color in warehouses and schools.

Duct Tape buying guide

How to pick the right duct tape and pack size.

  1. Match the Grade to the Job

Standard Duck gray tape covers household, office and light warehouse use. Choose 3M Pro Strength or another professional grade for construction and daily job-site use. Choose T-REX or another extra strength tape when the repair is outdoors, on a vehicle or under load for weeks.

  2. Compare Length, Not Just Price

All common rolls are 1.88 inches wide, but lengths run from 10 yards for printed rolls to 60 yards for contractor rolls. A 10 yard craft roll and a 45 yard utility roll can look alike on the shelf. Divide price by yards before comparing a single roll against a 3-pack or case.

  3. Colored Tape Is for Identification

Colored and printed Duck Tape is standard grade. Use it to color code bins, mark floor zones, label cords and personalize equipment, or for crafts and school projects. For strength, buy by grade and not by color; gray, black and white are available in both standard and heavier grades.

  4. Know What Duct Tape Is Not For

Duct tape is not an electrical insulator and should not replace electrical tape on wire. It leaves residue on painted walls and finished wood, so use painter's tape there. Sealing HVAC duct joints requires foil tape. Keep the right tape for each job to avoid damage and rework.

  5. Buy Cases for Crews and Classrooms

Gray duct tape comes in single rolls, 3-packs and 6-packs with manufacturer cases above that. A crew of four uses a roll or two a week, so a case lasts a season. Schools and camps often order mixed colors in 20 yard rolls for a semester of projects.

Duct Tape: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying duct tape from SNILLC.

Is the duct tape on SNILLC genuine brand product?

Yes. Every roll is a new, genuine product from Duck Brand, T-REX, Shurtech, 3M, Scotch or Henkel in original manufacturer packaging. SNILLC does not sell unbranded or relabeled duct tape.

Can I buy duct tape in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members ($49 per year) get wholesale and case-pack pricing on gray, colored and printed duct tape in 3-packs, 6-packs and manufacturer cases. For 6 or more packs or pallet quantities, use Request a bulk quote in the cart and SNILLC will price the order.

Which brands of duct tape does SNILLC carry?

Duck Brand is the largest line with over 50 items, followed by Shurtech, T-REX, 3M, Scotch and Henkel. That covers standard gray tape, solid colors, printed and camo designs, and professional and extra strength grades.

Do you ship duct tape nationwide, and how fast?

Yes. SNILLC ships to every US state from Rancho Cordova, California, with tracking on every order. Ready-to-ship rolls go out fastest, and West Coast addresses usually receive orders sooner than the East Coast. SNILLC does not ship outside the United States.

Is there a minimum order for duct tape?

No. Retail shoppers can buy a single roll. Business members get wholesale pricing on standard packs, and bulk quotes start at 6 packs or case quantities.

What is the difference between Duck Tape, T-REX and 3M Pro Strength?

Duck gray tape is a standard utility grade for everyday repairs. 3M Pro Strength 1260-C is a professional grade with denser backing and more adhesive, sold in 60 yard rolls for job sites. T-REX is an extra strength tape with the thickest backing and a UV-resistant film for outdoor and automotive work. Price rises with grade.

How long is a roll of duct tape?

It depends on the type. Printed Duck Tape rolls are 10 yards, solid colored rolls are 20 yards, standard gray utility rolls are 45 yards and contractor rolls such as 3M Pro Strength are 60 yards. Nearly all are 1.88 inches wide on a 3 inch core.

Is colored duct tape as strong as gray?

Colored and printed Duck Tape is standard grade, so it is similar in strength to standard gray Duck tape but not to professional or extra strength grades. Use color for identification, labeling and crafts. For heavy repairs, choose a pro or extra strength tape regardless of color.

Can duct tape be used on HVAC ducts or electrical wiring?

No. Despite the name, cloth duct tape is not approved for sealing HVAC duct joints, which require foil tape or mastic that withstands heat cycling. It is also not an electrical insulator; use vinyl electrical tape rated to 600 volts for wire. Duct tape is for general repair, bundling and patching.

How should duct tape be stored?

Keep rolls in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, ideally 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat makes the adhesive ooze and the roll hard to unwind; cold stiffens it. Stored properly, duct tape stays usable for a year or more, and rotating oldest stock first keeps performance consistent.
