About binders

A three-ring binder is a stiff cover, usually chipboard wrapped in vinyl or polypropylene, with a metal ring mechanism riveted to the spine or back cover. Rings open to accept hole-punched pages, sheet protectors and dividers. Binders are sized by ring diameter: 0.5 in holds about 100 sheets, 1 in about 175 to 225, 1.5 in about 350, 2 in about 500, and 3 in about 600 or more. Letter size, 8.5x11 in, is standard; legal and mini sizes are also made.

Round rings are mounted on the spine and cost the least. They suit light use and binders under 2 in. D-rings and slant D-rings are mounted on the back cover, so pages lie flat and the spine stays straight when the binder is full. D-ring binders hold up to 25 percent more paper than round rings of the same size. View binders add a clear overlay on the cover and spine so you can slide in a printed title page, a feature nearly every office presentation binder uses.

Offices use view binders for proposals, client books and procedure manuals, and heavy-duty D-ring binders for records that are opened daily. Schools buy 1 in and 1.5 in round ring binders by the case for classroom sets. Accounting departments and IT teams use data binders for wide computer printouts. Look for a one-touch ring mechanism, reinforced hinges and interior pockets, and choose the ring size with room to grow.

Binders buying guide

How to pick the right binders and pack size.

  1. Pick the ring size by sheet count

Estimate the pages you will file, then add room for growth. A 1 in binder holds roughly 200 sheets, 2 in holds about 500, and 3 in about 600 or more. Sheet protectors take extra space, so size up one step if most pages will be sleeved.

  2. Round ring vs D-ring

Round rings are economical and fine for binders under 2 in that are not opened often. D-rings and slant D-rings keep pages flat, hold more paper, and keep the spine from bowing. For daily-use manuals and anything 2 in or larger, choose a D-ring.

  3. View binder or standard cover

A view binder has clear overlay pockets on the front, back and spine so you can insert a printed cover and spine label. It is the standard for client-facing books. Non-view binders cost less and are the choice for internal filing and student use where appearance is secondary.

  4. Check the paper size

Most binders take 8.5x11 in letter paper. Legal binders hold 8.5x14 in sheets and are longer top to bottom. Mini binders take 5.5x8.5 in paper. Data binders are made for 11x8.5 in landscape printouts or 14-7/8x11 in continuous forms. Match the binder to the paper you actually file.

  5. Buy by the case for classrooms and teams

Avery binders ship 2, 4, 6 or 12 to a case depending on ring size. Case packs bring the per-binder cost down for teacher supply lists, onboarding kits and resale. Choose one color for uniform sets or assorted colors to color-code subjects or departments.

Binders: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying binders from SNILLC.

Are the binders on SNILLC genuine brand products?

Yes. Every binder SNILLC sells is a new, genuine Avery, Five Star, ACCO, Mead or Quartet product in original manufacturer packaging. Product numbers match the manufacturer's catalog.

Can I buy binders in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members with a $49 per year membership get wholesale and case-pack pricing on binders. For 6 or more packs or pallet quantities, request a bulk quote from the cart and SNILLC will price the order.

Which brands of binders does SNILLC carry?

Avery is the main brand, with about 170 Avery view, round ring, D-ring, legal and data binders. SNILLC also carries Five Star binders for students, ACCO data and presentation binders, and single items from Mead and Quartet.

Do you ship binders nationwide and how fast?

Yes. SNILLC ships binders to all 50 states from Rancho Cordova, California, with tracking on every order. Ready-to-ship items leave fastest. SNILLC does not ship outside the USA.

Is there a minimum order for binders?

No. Retail shoppers can buy one binder, with free shipping at $60 or more and $9.99 under that. Business members have no minimum, though case-pack pricing applies to full cases and bulk quotes start at 6 packs.

How many pages does a 1 inch binder hold?

A 1 in round ring binder holds about 175 sheets of 20 lb paper; a 1 in D-ring holds about 225. A 1.5 in binder holds roughly 350 sheets, 2 in about 500, and 3 in about 600. Sheet protectors and dividers reduce those counts.

What is the difference between D-ring and round ring binders?

Round rings attach to the spine and are the lower-cost option for light use. D-rings attach to the back cover, hold about 25 percent more paper, let pages lie flat, and keep the spine straight. Slant D-rings are a variation that makes page turning easier.

Which binders are best for school?

A 1 in or 1.5 in round ring binder covers most single-subject classes, and a 2 in D-ring works for combined subjects. Five Star and Avery Durable binders have reinforced hinges that survive a year in a backpack. View binders let students slide in a printed cover.

Can I print a custom cover for a view binder?

Yes. Avery view binders have clear pockets on the front, back and spine. Print a cover and spine insert from Avery Design & Print or Word, trim, and slide them in. Avery also sells printable spine inserts separately in the index dividers category.

Do you sell legal-size binders?

Yes. SNILLC carries Avery legal-size binders for 8.5x14 in pages, including 1 in round ring binders in 2-packs and durable view binders. Pair them with legal exhibit dividers for court and closing binders.
