About ballpoint pens

A ballpoint pen dispenses thick oil-based ink through a small steel or tungsten carbide ball at the tip. Because the ink is viscous and contains little water, it dries on contact, does not bleed through thin paper and writes on glossy stock, carbon forms and receipts where gel or liquid ink would smear. A single ballpoint refill writes far longer than a gel refill, which keeps the cost per page very low. These traits make the ballpoint the most common pen in offices, banks, retail counters and schools.

Ballpoints come in three main styles. Disposable stick pens such as the Paper Mate Write Bros and BIC Round Stic have a cap and a fixed ink tube and are sold by the dozen for high-turnover use. Retractable click pens such as the BIC Glide, Pilot Dr. Grip and Zebra F-301 keep the tip protected and often take a replaceable refill. Refillable metal pens from Parker, Zebra and Pentel use standard Parker-style or brand-specific refills and are kept for years.

Point size changes how a ballpoint feels. A 0.7 mm fine point writes a crisp line for forms and small handwriting but takes more pressure. A 1.0 mm medium point is the standard office size. Bold 1.2 mm to 1.6 mm points, such as the BIC Glide Bold, lay down a darker, smoother line with less pressure, which many people prefer for signatures. Newer hybrid inks in the Pilot Acroball and uni-ball Jetstream combine ballpoint dry time with a smoother, darker line.

Ballpoint Pens buying guide

How to pick the right ballpoint pens and pack size.

  1. Stick pens for volume, retractables for desks

Disposable stick pens such as the Paper Mate Write Bros and BIC Round Stic cost the least per pen and suit lobbies, classrooms, sign-in counters and giveaways where pens walk away. Retractable pens such as the BIC Glide or Pilot Dr. Grip are better for assigned desks because they are refillable and have no cap to lose.

  2. Choose the point size

Fine 0.7 mm points suit forms, ledgers and small handwriting. Medium 1.0 mm is the all-purpose office size and the most common in stock. Bold 1.2 mm to 1.6 mm points, like the BIC Glide Bold, write darker and smoother with less hand pressure and are preferred for signatures and quick notes.

  3. Consider hybrid ink pens

Hybrid-ink ballpoints such as the Pilot Acroball and uni-ball Jetstream use a lower-viscosity oil ink that writes nearly as smooth and dark as a gel pen but dries as fast as a standard ballpoint. They cost more per pen but are a good upgrade for staff who find classic ballpoints scratchy.

  4. Check the refill before you standardize

If you plan to keep pens for years, confirm the refill is stocked. Parker-style refills fit Parker Jotter pens and many metal pens from other brands. Pilot Acroball, Pilot Dr. Grip and Zebra F-301 use brand-specific refills that SNILLC carries in its Pen Refills category.

  5. Buy by the box, then by the case

Ballpoints are normally sold 12 to a box of a single color, and retail packs of 4, 8 or 10 are common for BIC and Paper Mate. Offices should stock black and blue in dozens. For 6 or more boxes or full cases, business members can request a bulk quote for lower per-pen pricing.

Ballpoint Pens: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying ballpoint pens from SNILLC.

Are the ballpoint pens on SNILLC genuine brand products?

Yes. Every ballpoint pen on SNILLC is a new, genuine product from BIC, Pilot, Paper Mate, Pentel, Zebra, uni-ball or Parker in the manufacturer's original packaging. SNILLC does not sell generic, relabeled or refurbished pens.

Can I buy ballpoint pens in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members with a $49 per year membership get wholesale and case-pack pricing on ballpoint pens, normally sold 12 to a box. For 6 or more boxes or pallet quantities, add the pens to your cart and choose Request a bulk quote for a custom price.

Which brands of ballpoint pens does SNILLC carry?

SNILLC carries about 530 ballpoint pens from Pentel, BIC, Pilot, Paper Mate, Zebra, uni-ball and Parker. Popular lines include Paper Mate Write Bros, BIC Glide and Round Stic, Pilot Dr. Grip and Acroball, Zebra F-301 and uni-ball Jetstream.

Do you ship ballpoint pens nationwide and how fast?

SNILLC ships ballpoint pens to every US state from its Rancho Cordova, California warehouse, with tracking on every order. Items marked Ready to ship leave fastest. Transit time depends on the carrier and your distance from Northern California.

Is there a minimum order for ballpoint pens?

No. Retail shoppers can buy a single pen or pack. Shipping is free on retail orders of $60 or more and $9.99 under that. Business members buy by the box or case at wholesale prices, and bulk quotes start at 6 or more packs.

What is the difference between a ballpoint pen and a gel pen?

A ballpoint uses thick oil-based ink that dries instantly, lasts longer per refill and works on glossy paper and carbon forms. A gel pen uses water-based pigment gel that writes smoother and more vividly but uses ink faster and can smear before it dries. Ballpoints cost less per page; gel pens feel smoother.

Which ballpoint pen is best for offices and schools?

For schools and high-turnover offices, the Paper Mate Write Bros and BIC Round Stic stick pens offer the lowest cost per pen and are sold by the dozen. For assigned desks, the retractable BIC Glide Bold or Pilot Dr. Grip write smoother and can be refilled.

Are ballpoint pens refillable?

Many retractable and metal ballpoints are. Parker pens use the Parker-style refill, which also fits many other metal pens. Pilot Acroball, Pilot Dr. Grip and Zebra F-301 take brand-specific refills stocked in SNILLC's Pen Refills category. Low-cost stick pens such as the BIC Cristal are disposable.

What does 1.0 mm or 1.6 mm mean on a ballpoint pen?

It is the diameter of the ball at the tip, which sets the line width. A 0.7 mm fine point draws a thin line for forms; 1.0 mm medium is the standard office size; 1.2 mm to 1.6 mm bold points write a darker, smoother line with less pressure, as in the BIC Glide Bold.

How long do ballpoint pens last in storage?

Oil-based ballpoint ink is very stable. Sealed pens typically write fine after three years or more when stored at room temperature away from heat and sunlight. Store boxes flat and keep caps on stick pens. Heat can thin the ink and cause blobbing, so avoid storing pens in hot vehicles or near radiators.
