Over 120 desktop models, including the Swingline 747 business stapler (30 sheets) and the Bostitch Executive 3-in-1 stapler (20 sheets) with stapling, tacking and pinning modes.
About 30 heavy-duty staplers from Bostitch, Swingline, PaperPro and Spec Ops for 60 to 240 sheets, using SB35 and other long-leg heavy-duty staples.
More than 90 staple products: Bostitch B8 PowerCrown 1/4 inch 6-box value packs, Rapid 19-series fine wire, PaperPro 25/10 high-capacity 3/8 inch and Stanley TRA704T narrow crown staples.
Electric and battery-operated staplers from Bostitch and Swingline for high-volume front desks and copy rooms where hand stapling slows people down.
Bostitch premium staple removers in 3-packs, plus push-style and claw-style removers that lift staples without tearing the paper.
Spec Ops and Bostitch plier staplers for tagging, bagging and bundling, and staple guns for fastening into wood, fabric and insulation.
A stapler is sized by the number of sheets it fastens and the staple it takes. Standard desktop staplers use a 1/4 inch leg staple (often sold as 26/6 or standard) and handle 20 to 30 sheets. Reduced-effort models from PaperPro and Bostitch use a spring mechanism so the same staple goes through 25 or more sheets with light pressure. Heavy-duty staplers take longer-leg staples, from 3/8 inch for about 60 sheets up to 3/4 inch or more for 200-plus sheets, and are set to the stack thickness before use.
Staple codes describe the staple. In 26/6, the first number is the wire gauge and the second is the leg length in millimeters; 1/4 inch is about 6 mm. Bostitch B8 PowerCrown staples have a wider crown that holds thick stacks flat and fit B8 staplers only. Rapid 19-series and Stanley TRA staples are fine wire for hammer tackers and light staple guns. Using the staple a model is designed for prevents jams; the rated staple is usually printed on the stapler base.
Beyond the desk, plier staplers close bags, tags and cardboard where there is no flat surface. Staple guns drive heavier staples into wood for upholstery, screening and insulation. Electric staplers fasten a set number of sheets with no hand effort and suit reception desks, mailrooms and copy rooms. A staple remover finishes the set; claw removers are fastest and push-style removers are gentler on the paper.
How to pick the right staplers & punches and pack size.
Count the thickest stack you fasten regularly. A 20 to 30 sheet desktop stapler covers most offices. Choose a 60 sheet heavy-duty model for reports and packets, and a 100 to 240 sheet model for manuals and legal filings. Rated capacity assumes 20 lb paper.
Check the base or manual for the staple code before ordering. Standard 1/4 inch (26/6) staples fit most desktop staplers. Bostitch B8 PowerCrown staples fit B8 models only. Heavy-duty staplers take 3/8, 1/2 or longer legs matched to the stack, such as Bostitch SB35 1/2 inch for about 100 sheets.
PaperPro and Bostitch spring-powered staplers drive 25 or more sheets with one finger and are easier for high-volume users and for anyone with hand fatigue. A standard Swingline 747 is heavier and metal-bodied, which many offices prefer for durability on a shared desk.
If one person staples hundreds of sets a day, an electric or battery stapler saves time and prevents partial staples. They are fixed at a sheet range, often 20 to 30 sheets, so keep a heavy-duty manual stapler nearby for thick jobs.
Standard staples come 5,000 per box, with Bostitch B8 PowerCrown sold in 6-box value packs. Heavy-duty staples are usually 1,000 per box. For a shared office, a case of standard staples lasts months; a pack per stapler is the easier way to keep every desk supplied.

Look at the stapler base or manual for the staple size. Most desktop staplers use standard 1/4 inch (26/6) staples. Bostitch B8 staplers use B8 PowerCrown staples, which have a wider crown and do not fit standard models. Heavy-duty staplers take 3/8 inch to 3/4 inch or longer legs, matched to the number of sheets.
A desktop stapler fastens 20 to 30 sheets with 1/4 inch staples. A heavy-duty stapler fastens 60 to 240 sheets with longer-leg staples and usually has an adjustable depth setting. For thick reports, manuals or court filings, heavy-duty is the right tool; for everyday paperwork, desktop is lighter and cheaper.
A metal desktop stapler such as the Swingline 747 or a reduced-effort PaperPro or Bostitch model holds up to daily student use and fastens 25 to 30 sheets. Teachers assembling thick packets often add one heavy-duty stapler per grade team. Buy standard staples by the 5,000-count box.
