About pencils

A pencil writes with a core of graphite mixed with clay or polymer, which rubs off onto paper and can be erased. Wood-cased pencils are sharpened to a point and graded by hardness: HB, the familiar #2, is the standard for writing and for answer sheets read by scanners, while softer B grades write darker and harder H grades write lighter. Mechanical pencils hold a thin lead of fixed diameter, from 0.5 mm to 1.3 mm, and advance it with a click, so the line width stays constant without sharpening.

Colored pencils use a core of pigment bound in wax or oil instead of graphite. Student grades are harder and cheaper; artist grades such as Prismacolor Premier have soft, heavily pigmented cores that blend and layer, and are sold individually so artists can replace the colors they use most. Drawing pencils such as the Prismacolor Premier Turquoise come in a full range of graphite grades from 9H to 9B for sketching, shading and technical drawing.

Schools buy wooden #2 pencils and thick-lead mechanical pencils by the box for daily work and testing, along with lead refills and sharpeners. Offices tend to standardize on a 0.5 mm or 0.7 mm mechanical pencil and keep Pentel leads in the supply closet. Artists, designers and drafters buy Prismacolor, Pentel GraphGear and Rotring pencils in specific grades and sizes. All graphite and colored pencils store indefinitely at room temperature.

Pencils buying guide

How to pick the right pencils and pack size.

  1. Wooden or mechanical

Wooden #2 pencils cost the least per pencil, are required for the SAT and ACT and work for any age group, but they need sharpening. Mechanical pencils keep a constant line, never need a sharpener and are refillable with leads and erasers, which makes them the better value for offices and older students.

  2. Choose lead size and grade

For mechanical pencils, pick 0.5 mm for fine math and drafting work, 0.7 mm for everyday notes and 0.9 mm or 1.3 mm for young students and heavy-handed writers. For grade, HB (#2) is the standard for writing and scanned tests; 2B and softer are for sketching; 2H and harder are for drafting.

  3. Student or artist colored pencils

Student colored pencils have harder cores that resist breaking and cost less in class sets. Artist pencils such as Prismacolor Premier have soft wax cores that blend smoothly and are sold open stock by single color, so you can buy only the colors you run out of, such as white for highlights.

  4. Stock refills and sharpeners

Lead refills are universal by diameter, so one box of 0.7 mm Pentel Super Hi-Polymer lead covers 0.7 mm pencils of any brand. Eraser refills are specific to the pencil model. For wooden pencils, a Bostitch electric sharpener handles classroom volume and a manual sharpener suits a desk.

  5. Buy by the dozen or the class set

Pencils and leads are normally sold 12 to a box, with wooden #2 pencils also in boxes of 24, 72 or 144 for schools. Prismacolor colored pencils come as singles or sets of 12 to 150. Business members can request a bulk quote on 6 or more boxes to supply a department or school.

Pencils: questions, answered

Straight answers about buying pencils from SNILLC.

Are the pencils on SNILLC genuine brand products?

Yes. Every pencil, lead refill and sharpener on SNILLC is a new, genuine product from Pentel, Prismacolor, BIC, Paper Mate, uni-ball, Zebra, Rotring or Bostitch in the manufacturer's original packaging. SNILLC does not sell generic or relabeled pencils.

Can I buy pencils in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members with a $49 per year membership get wholesale and case-pack pricing on mechanical pencils, leads, wooden pencils and colored pencils, usually sold 12 to a box. For 6 or more boxes or pallet quantities, add the items to your cart and choose Request a bulk quote.

Which brands of pencils does SNILLC carry?

SNILLC carries over 500 pencils and leads from Pentel, Prismacolor, BIC, Paper Mate, uni-ball, Zebra and Rotring, plus Bostitch pencil sharpeners. Pentel makes up most of the mechanical pencil and lead selection, and Prismacolor covers graphite drawing pencils and artist colored pencils.

Do you ship pencils nationwide and how fast?

SNILLC ships pencils to every US state from its Rancho Cordova, California warehouse, with tracking on every order. Items marked Ready to ship leave fastest. Transit time depends on the carrier and your distance from Northern California.

Is there a minimum order for pencils?

No. Retail shoppers can buy a single pencil or tube of lead. Shipping is free on retail orders of $60 or more and $9.99 under that. Business members buy by the box or case at wholesale prices, and bulk quotes start at 6 or more packs.

What does #2 or HB mean on a pencil?

Both describe the same medium hardness. #2 is the American scale and HB is the European scale, and they are interchangeable. HB graphite is dark enough for scanned answer sheets but hard enough not to smudge badly, which is why it is the standard for schools, tests and offices. Softer grades are B and 2B; harder grades are H and 2H.

Are mechanical pencils or wooden pencils better for schools?

Wooden #2 pencils are cheapest, required for the SAT and ACT and simplest for young children. Mechanical pencils with 0.9 mm or 1.3 mm lead, such as the Paper Mate Handwriting, avoid sharpening and keep a consistent line, which many classrooms prefer. Many schools buy both and keep lead refills on hand.

What is the difference between Prismacolor Premier and student colored pencils?

Prismacolor Premier pencils have soft, wax-based, heavily pigmented cores that blend, layer and burnish smoothly, and they are sold individually so artists can restock single colors like white. Student colored pencils have harder cores that resist breaking, cost less and come in class sets, but they do not blend as richly.

Can I use any brand of lead in my mechanical pencil?

Yes, as long as the diameter matches. A 0.7 mm Pentel Super Hi-Polymer lead works in a 0.7 mm BIC, Paper Mate, uni-ball or Zebra pencil. Eraser refills are specific to the pencil model, so match those to the brand. SNILLC stocks leads in its Mechanical Pencil Leads category.

Do pencils expire or go bad in storage?

No. Graphite and colored pencil cores do not dry out, so pencils and lead refills store for years at room temperature. Keep wooden pencils dry so the wood does not warp, and store colored pencils flat and out of heat so the wax cores do not soften. Schools can safely buy a year's supply at once.
