About Pilot

Pilot Corporation was founded in Tokyo in 1918 and is one of the largest pen manufacturers in the world. Pilot Corporation of America, based in Jacksonville, Florida, has sold the brand in the United States since 1972. Pilot makes everything from disposable Varsity fountain pens to gold-nib Custom pens, but in US offices the name is attached most often to the G2 gel pen and the Precise V5 rollerball.

Pilot's strength is ink engineering. The G2 uses a smooth gel ink and a comfortable rubber grip and has been one of the best-selling gel pens in America for years. Precise pens use a liquid ink feed with a needle point that produces a sharp, consistent line. FriXion ink is thermo-sensitive, so the rubber tip on the cap erases it by friction heat with no shavings, which makes it a favorite for planners and students.

Offices standardize on G2 because refills are easy to find and one pen body accepts several tip sizes. Accountants, nurses and anyone who writes small choose Precise V5 extra fine. Teachers and planner users buy FriXion so mistakes disappear. Fountain pen users start with the Metropolitan and move up to the Custom 74 or the retractable Vanishing Point.

Pilot buying guide

How to pick the right Pilot product and pack size.

  1. Choose the G2 tip size

G2 comes in 0.38 mm ultra fine, 0.5 mm extra fine, 0.7 mm fine and 1.0 mm bold. 0.7 mm is the office default and the most widely stocked refill. Pick 0.38 or 0.5 for planners and small handwriting and 1.0 mm for signatures and bold notes.

  2. Precise V5 versus V7

V5 is extra fine at 0.5 mm and V7 is fine at 0.7 mm. Both use liquid ink and a needle point. Capped Precise pens have a fixed refill; the RT retractable versions take Precise V5 RT or V7 RT refills, so order RT refills only for RT pens.

  3. FriXion for erasable writing

FriXion ink erases with the pen's own rubber tip and is best for planners, worksheets and notes. Do not use it for checks, legal documents or anything that will sit in a hot car, because heat above about 140 F clears the ink. Clicker pens take FriXion refills in 0.5 and 0.7 mm.

  4. Fountain pen refills

Pilot fountain pens use Pilot's own cartridges and CON-40 or CON-70 converters, not international standard cartridges. The Varsity is disposable. Metropolitan takes CON-40; the Custom 74 and Vanishing Point take CON-40 or CON-70 depending on the model. Check your model before buying.

  5. Dozen boxes save money

Most Pilot pens and refills are packed 12 per box. Retail shoppers can buy one pen or a 2-pack of refills, while business members get the lowest per-unit price by ordering full boxes or cases of 12 boxes.

Pilot questions, answered

Straight answers about buying Pilot products from SNILLC.

Are Pilot pens on SNILLC genuine?

Yes. Every Pilot pen, refill and marker SNILLC sells is new, genuine and in original Pilot packaging. SN International is a US distributor based in Rancho Cordova, California, and does not sell used, refurbished or imitation pens.

Can I buy Pilot G2 pens in bulk or wholesale?

Yes. Business members pay $49 a year for wholesale and case-pack pricing on the full Pilot range. G2 pens and refills come 12 per box, and you can request a bulk quote from the cart for 6 or more boxes or pallet quantities.

What Pilot products does SNILLC carry?

SNILLC lists about 550 Pilot items: roughly 168 gel pens (G2, G2 Premium, FriXion), 100 fountain pens, 99 ballpoints (Acroball, Dr. Grip), 87 refills, plus Precise liquid rollerballs, permanent and dry-erase markers, highlighters and calligraphy pens. Best sellers include Precise V5 RT refills, Precise V10, FriXion Clicker and G2 refills.

Do you ship Pilot products nationwide and how fast?

SNILLC ships Pilot products to all 50 states from its California warehouse with tracking on every order. Items marked Ready to ship leave fastest. We ship within the United States only.

Is there a minimum order for Pilot pens?

No. Retail shoppers can buy one pen or one pack of refills. Retail orders of $60 or more ship free; smaller orders pay a $9.99 flat rate. Wholesale pricing requires a business membership, and full boxes of 12 give the best per-unit price.

Which refill fits the Pilot G2?

The G2 and G2 Premium take Pilot G2 refills in 0.38, 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0 mm. The tip size is printed on the clip and on the original refill. SNILLC stocks G2 refills in 0.7 and 1.0 mm by the pack and by the box.

What is the difference between Pilot Precise V5 and V7?

The Precise V5 writes an extra-fine 0.5 mm line and the V7 writes a fine 0.7 mm line. Both are liquid ink rollerballs with a needle tip. Capped versions are not refillable; the Precise V5 RT and V7 RT retractables take matching RT refills.

Can Pilot FriXion ink really be erased?

Yes. FriXion ink turns clear with friction heat from the rubber tip on the pen, leaving no shavings. It is ideal for planners and notes. Because heat erases it, avoid FriXion for checks, contracts or documents stored in hot places. Chilling the paper can bring erased ink back.

Which Pilot fountain pen is best for a beginner?

The Pilot Metropolitan is the usual starting point: a metal body, a smooth steel nib and a low price. The Varsity is a disposable option for trying fountain pens. Both use Pilot cartridges; the Metropolitan also accepts the CON-40 converter for bottled ink.

Do Pilot pens dry out in storage?

Unopened Pilot gel and ballpoint pens store well for years at room temperature away from heat and sunlight. Keep liquid ink Precise pens capped and stored horizontally. Fountain pen cartridges keep for several years sealed.
